Sokoto State Government Commends NOTAP's Stride In Local Technology Promotion
The Sokoto State Government has commended the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP) for her drive to promote local technologies towards the industrial development of the nation.
Deputy Governor of Sokoto State, Barrister Mukhtar Shehu Shagari gave the commendation while speaking as Special Guest of Honor at a two day Techmart and Exhibition organized by NOTAP in Abuja.
He said the Office has over the years raised awareness on local technological inputs in Nigeria but there must be a political will by the government to push forward the issues that have to do with Science, Technology and Innovation if the nation is to move forward industrially. Barrister Mukhtar Shehu Shagari emphasized that without encouragement to Nigerian Inventors and Innovators no meaningful development will be made in the Science, Technology and Innovation sector. He stressed that Sokoto State Government has demonstrated great commitment to issues of science and technology development since it is the basis for development in the 21st century. He asserted that the State government’s presence at the 2013 NOTAP Techmart and Exhibition is part of the commitment towards the development of the sector.
The Deputy Governor said without selfless leadership, Nigeria will not achieve much in terms of development and called on leaders to shun corruption and support funding of meaningful projects such as indigenous technologies that will lead to job creation and wellbeing of Nigerians.
Welcoming exhibitors and other participants to the event, the Director General of NOTAP Engr. Umar buba Bindir said the Techmart is an annual event meant to showcase the capabilities of Nigerian scientists in developing technologies that will help in job creation and economic development of the nation. He asserted that the Office mandate is to raise awareness on local technologies so that investors can take it up for commercialization.
Then Minister of Science and Technology Professor Ita Okon Bassey Ewa represented by the Director Technology Acquisition and Assesment in the Ministry Dr. A Talabi said technology is a major instrument for global trade and competitiveness and as prime engine of economic prosperity nations across the globe are devising new strategies for boosting innovation and exploiting them. He emphasized that much of what have been developed from Research Institutions are neither known to the public nor are they transformed into products and services for sustained industrial growth and development of the nation. This he stressed informed the organization of such a Techmart to match research outputs with the needs of industry especially the small and medium enterprises SMEs in order to encourage the creation of cottage industries and spinoffs as a tool of combating the growing army of the un-employed youths in the country.
Dignitaries who attended the exhibition and inspected various inventions include; the representatives of Minister of Education, Governors of Kano, Bauchi and Katsina. Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology Mrs. Rabi Shuaibu Jimeta, President Abuja Chamber of Commerce, Mines and Agriculture (ABUCCIMA) Dr. Solomon Nyagba and Director-General Center for Management Development (CMD) Dr. Kabir Kabo Usman were also in attendance and inspected the exhibition mounted at the NOTAP exhibition arena.
The two day Techmart and Technology Exhibition meant to create awareness on Research and Development results and innovations from the Nigerian knowledge system capable of developing the economy attracted an array of inventors and innovators from across the length and breadth of Nigeria.
